Google Chrome Review
Before i start, let me just say that the only browsers i use are firefox (THE Browser) and IE (just to check if the pages that i develop appear correctly and work). So, in advance, i’m sorry if i point some feature in google Chrome that already exists natively in other browser.
Yesterday i finally got access to Google Chrome Download Page, some time after the anouncement made on google’s official blog. The expectation was high and Google didn’t disappoint.
First, the installation is very quick. I went to http://www.google.com/chrome, Clicked the big blue button, downloaded a setup file, and chrome was installed in no time. Simple, quick, straight to the point.
First thing i noticed: The speed!!! The browser loads in a flash (not like firefox that, at least in my computer, takes a little time to load). When i started to browse some pages, i was astonished with the load speed.
Like google explained in the google chrome presentation comic book, chrome uses one process for each tab. This has several advantages. The ones that i best remember are:
- If a page crashes, only that page is closed, not the browser;
- When we don’t need a page, the process of that tab is closed and the memory allocated is released.
- native language corrector (it has some bugs, but this is only a beta, i give a discount).
- element inspector in the right context menu.

True, Chrome is quick to load and fast to browse. Good it has using multi threading concept for each HTML pages.
While login Windows Live, displays an upgrade the browser information, however clicking “continue to Windows Live Hotmail” option helps to continue without any issues.
For Chrome, it is a good beginning and it must grow with more by introducing user friendly features, until then i will be using Firefox.

I installed it on a windows XP. According to google, the package is both valid to install in Windows XP and Vista. If you have a Mac or a Linux system you will have to wait.

i was very excited to check out chrome, and for the most part really like it. however after hearing (over and over again) about how it uses a process for each tab, which prevents the whole browser from crashing if one tab has a problem, i was surprised to crash the entire browser not only once, but twice within the first 30 minutes of using it. I had about 20 tabs loaded each time, suddenly the entire browser would become un-responsive and never recover.
I understand this is still beta, but after reading about how this should never happen, over and over again, I found it a bit annoying that it was so easy to bring the browser down… and I still have yet to have a single tab crash while keeping the browser up.

That is interesting, because that was one of the big features of Chrome and you’re not the first person to tell me he already crashed the browser.
I only had problems when i play a lot of flash videos at the same time. It doesn’t crash, but it becomes very slow and unstable.
Has you said nick, it is still a beta. But is unfortunate that in the first day one of the main features brings so much problems to the users.

What I miss are the menus which other browsers have - at least they help in case you need them. In Chrome there are no menus except for icons which if one does not click on them will never be able to figure anything out. I have rarely used IE always relied on Firefox - there are problems with being able to select a background image, I was told to use Internet Explorer for that, it is as if all the other browsers do not exist, why did not ask me to select a browser of my choice to see the background picture. This attempt by Google has yet to impress me. Why should I select Hotmail, when I do not have a Hotmail account. It is a strange feeling that one suspects that Google and Microsoft are one and the same company - both pretending to be rivals - there are so many Windows links in Chrome and the homepage is not even Google it is Mysearch - why?
I had the same crashing problem as nick. It happened to me twice in about 30mins, ironically, while browsing youtube.
I crashed the flash plugin, and had to close the whole browser.
Chrome also seems to be processor-heavy on my machine. I can hear my system “working” the entire time I have the browser open.
Some great features, but I think I’ll wait until a few bugs are worked out before making a switch.
I like to have Winamp always on top but then I can’t easily open a new tab in Chrome. This button is easier to approach in Firefox.
I like its simple and useful features. But I have crashes…the whole browser and crashed many times.
I tried Chrome on http://www.thestreet.com and cnn.com watching flash videos. I never have problem watching video on IE or firefox, if sometimes the page just not loading right, I can close the page and start over. I thought Chrome suppose to be better than that… multi-processes which never stop the browser, but after a few videos, the video stopped and hung the whole Chrome browser with like 4 tabs on it. It does not have the same issue on IE or FF, but it crashed on shinny new Chrome. I hope they will work this out on final release. If it is more stable, I will use it as my default for its speed and usefulness.
I found Chrome very slow and inconsistent on any websites that had much flash, or complicated structure. These pages load quickly and correctly in Firefox/IE/Opera, things like Tigerdirect.ca and roger.ca would just hang for up to 30 seconds before loading. After using the browser for an hour I’m giving it up until the next iteration, it has a few nifty features, but nothing that overcomes it’s drawbacks.

Besides being tagged with unique key for each installation (check Privacy Policy) Chrome is very close to being Adware/Spyware since it installs a lot of different programs when it installs itself. Check your Services section in CP for Google Updater Service and check your RUN section in registry for GoogleUpdater and you will see what i mean. Also note that they DO NOT delete when you uninstall Chrome so watch out!!!

It seems most of DHTML, AJAX stuff doesnt work properly on chorme..
I want more options: at least as many as Opera has. Until then Opera and Firefox are my friends

For a beta i think it has a lot of useful features. But has users we always want more. For us, developers, some things are missing but i believe that in future releases those feature will be there (like javascript debugger similar to firebug).
I must say that Chrome is a disappointment for me! It’s slow and unstable. It crashed a lot! And even if you can disable it, I don’t like the idea of Google collecting every letter that I type in by default!
So at this time I have to say I used to be a Chrome user!
I think you had some bad luck with chrome. At least with me, with a normal usage, it hasn’t crashed. Although it has some glitches and becomes slow when i play flash videos. But nothing to serious.
It’s still a beta and I’ll give it some discount. Hope that a future release resolves all those issues (i’m sure it will).
Chrome is nice and powerful.
PROS: Superfast. Clean user interface. Powerful architecture.
CONS: Too many privacy concerns. Lacks some functionality.
I wouldn’t trust Google with all my browsing. I would like some of its technology migrated to other browsers (FF & IE).
i keep learning about more and more advantages and features with Chrome, with privacy, for example; now if only they would take care of the browser’s fickle cookie management…
First of all, Google Chrome Beta (yes, it’s still in beta) which was released not long ago should not be compared with any browser because it has been released for a short while and this is there first browser and it’s just a Beta (not the completed version) unlike Firefox, and yet it still manages to challenge Firefox. Wait until Google releases 1-3 more updates/upgrades/newer versions to Google chrome and then try it again and most of you would like it (or since i’m now posting this, try the latest version of Google Chrome) but if you want add-ons/extensions that don’t slow down your browser or cause other issues like with Firefox, give Google 5 months - 1 year. Also, Google Chrome, believe it or not, is much faster, has a cleaner interface, uses less memory, crashes less than Firefox (with me) and is more secure and Google releases 10-30 nightly builds of Google Chrome everyday and also has a Developers/Testers channel which has newer versions of Google Chrome every 1-2 weeks (with a change log and new features etc) which are tested before they are publicly released. Google Chrome’s EUlA was changed the day it was released when an error was found in it.
Not too certain how I ran across this blog but glad I did find it. Think I was looking for something else online. Not sure I agree 100% with what you say, but have bookmaked and will pop back to understand to see if you add any extra posts. Carry on the good work.
