Here is a old movie concept, with a twist that can make it a blockbuster!

Old movie concept because it’s the old “bad guy kills all, bad guy takes girl, Good guy saves girl” cliché. But with a twist: an epic with action and great special effect.

All the sets are fantastic! By the looks of the trailer, it seems that 10000 bc will be one of the great movies of 2008. I hope i’m right (unfortunately some movies which i believed that could become great movies - like I am Legend - disappointed me…).

Tests with Photoshop

Although i am a programmer, i always had some interest for design. Yesterday i was making some tests with photoshop, and this was the final result:

Yes, it needs some work, but for a first try i think it is very acceptable

Two classics

Super Mario is a classic game. It has several years and the most of us played it in it’s original versions (Game Boy, NES, etc). For me, one of the most addicted games every made.

In our days, the 2D games are not classics anymore. They had been replaced by 3D action games (like Halo) of the new generation of consoles (XBOX360, PS3 and Wii).

But what if we joined the classics of the past with the classics of the present?

Wikia Search Alpha is here

The alpha of Wikia Search website was launched yesterday.

Let’s see how Wikia Search will distinguish itself from Google. One thing is positive: it’s 4 four Organizational principals:

1. Transparency - Openness in how the systems and algorithms operate, both in the form of open source licenses and open content + APIs.
2. Community - Everyone is able to contribute in some way (as individuals or entire organizations), strong social and community focus.
3. Quality - Significantly improve the relevancy and accuracy of search results and the searching experience.

Wherigo: An interesting concept

Wherigo is a game with an interisting concept. Is an adventure game but in the real world. Confused?

There are two sides. You can build the game or you can play it. I think the citation below ( taken from http://www.wherigo.com/about.aspx) explains the concept in simple terms:

Building

Using the Wherigo Builder application, Wherigo authors can build interactive adventure games, tour guides and other innovative activities for Wherigo players to enjoy outdoors. The Wherigo experience combines physical and virtual elements, overlaying engaging story lines and useful information onto a real-world background.

The basic building blocks of Wherigo are zones. Zones are areas on a map that represent locations in the real world. Zones can be created to be any shape an author chooses and are usually dependent on the type of experience the author desires to make and share. For instance, if an author wants to develop a tour, a zone could be created around a specific landmark.

Once the author is finished creating the experience, it is uploaded to the Wherigo site as a self-contained Wherigo file, called a cartridge. The published file is made available at www.wherigo.com to be downloaded by players equipped with the Wherigo Player application.

Playing

Using the Wherigo Player application and a GPS-enabled device, participants can visit physical locations, take and use virtual items, interact with virtual characters and solve real-world puzzles.

As a player enters and exits a zone using a GPS-enabled device, the players experience what the author intended for them, including viewing media, receiving directions or tasks and hearing sounds on the device. For instance, when a player walks into a zone, a player could “talk” to a virtual character, “pull” a virtual switch or “give” a virtual item to a character. As the player continues to move from zone to zone, an author’s fictional story, tour or adventure game can be experienced using Wherigo.

Wherigo can be more then just a game. The concept also aplies for a lot of other things, like tour guides for example.

Frameworks

Has a web developer, there are several frameworks i can use to accomplish my goal.

The smashmagazine blog published a post with a list of the main frameworks we can use for web development. I recommend the reading.

From the ones listed in the post above, i use:

• C# - ASP.NET - microsoft - Maybe because i’m very comfortable with it.
• Javascript Framework - mootools - I tested several already (jQuery for instance) an this one seem to be very simple and fast.

I still don’t use any CSS framework… maybe is time to investigate this a little…
